The 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway commemorates an ancient trail used by animals and people that connected southern portions of the Mississippi River to salt licks in today’s central Tennessee. During the 18th and 19th centuries, this ancient road was used by travelers on their journeys to and from Natchez to middle Tennessee.
Today, visitors can experience this National Scenic Byway and All-American Road through driving, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camping. The Natchez Trace Parkway runs through northwestern Itawamba County and includes such local historic and scenic sites as Twenty Mile Overlook, Donnavan Slough and Pharr Mounds.
